Peawanuck

Peawanuck is an isolated Cree community in Northern Ontario near the confluence of the Winisk and Shamattawa rivers. The current community is about 35 kilometres from the mouth of the Winisk River in Hudson Bay, where residents once lived in the community of Winisk. This also used to be a Mid-Canada Line Radar site. Winisk was permanently evacuated in 1986 after a disastrous flood, relocating on higher ground at its current site. The new settlement was dubbed Peawanuck, meaning “flintstone” in the Cree language. It only took seven months for the community to be rebuilt, with much credit going to community members determined to have their new homes ready by the following winter.
